Week 5: (10/22- 10/26)

Ok I am behind ...yet again...I know!! This week was quiet, not too too much to report during the week. Michelle and I did go to the Accademia Musee finally to see the David. It really was as incredible as everyone says. I am sad to say I really don't possess the passion for art and its history that I probably should living here but THIS was the exception. He was unreal. Brought tears to my eyes...imagine?? See the link for all pictures, but the top one is pretty self-explanatory.

We also climbed the Duomo (Cathedral)....468 steps through these narrow little passage ways to the views that overlook all of Florence. It was pretty unreal. The climb was exhausting and there were a couple of points when I did get really claustrophobic, but I got through it and it was all worth it :) Couple of pics above but there are many more on FB: follow this puppy-

That really does it for the week events but stay tuned....on ward to Milan tomorrow!

Weekend 4: (10/20- 10/21)- Pisa

So the rest of the weekend took me to Pisa, another cute little Tuscan city that reminded me alot of Florence...just smaller. Of course, I had to see the Leaning Tower, which is pretty cool (pics above) and it was much nicer (weather in Pisa, than Florence- where it was pouring rain) so it was a successful trip! The Baptisery and the Duomo's in Pisa, were both beautiful, but neither as spectacular as those you see in Florence.

Catching a train to Pisa was very different than the other Italian cities b/c they run so frequently that your ticket says nothing but a destination and you can simply get on any of them- lucky for me since I missed the first one! The train ride was nice...there are very few tunnels therefore you can really take in the sights. And it only takes about an hour, so the time flies.

Pisa is fairly easy to navigate around comparitively and it's tiny, much smaller than the other cities I have been to. The shopping was fantastic and on my way to the other side of town [to the Piazza Dei Miracoli where the Duomo (Cathedral), Baptistery And Leaning Tower Of Pisa are situated, I stopped in to a couple of stores and picked up some much needed winter clothing. Europe is such a fun place not only for travel but for shooping-- you can wear anything you want here, it is such a fun feeling!

Anyhow, in Pisa after playing tourist for the afternoon, I ate dinner at a little restaurant called Trattoria S. Omobono, where I had great Proscuitto & Funghi (again, Ham and Mushrooms) pizza and vino della cassa - rosso (red house wine) before continuing on my way. Being alone allows me to travel quickly so I was on a train back to Florence by about 6pm. Home in time to get settled in for the night, finish cleaning the apartment (which I have been procrastinating on doing for obvious reasons!) and get to bed early.

Who knows what next weekend will have in store for me-- I am thinking Milan and Bologna, but we will see!! Paris is booked for the 9th!

Stay tuned

Week 4: (10/15- 10/19)

It was a pretty quiet week this week. Michelle and I walked a few times and her sister arrived (for two weeks). We went on a walking tour of Florence on Thursday morning where I tour guide took us through Florence, and explained all the museums and attractions it was great! Our tour guide was incredible, and this phenomenal wealth of knowledge. The amount of detail she was able to provide was quite spectacular.

I included some pictures from the interior of the Duomo as this was my first time inside. Pictures do not even do, the beauty of, this cathedral justice.

On another note- Blair's sister- Amy had a little girl on Thursday night, so we are pleased to welcome Ms. Lauren Amelia into the world :) CONGRATS AM!! xo

On Friday I went DT for dinner and met some Canadians, who were all from Western Canada, working in Bermuda. I ended up sitting with them and then we met two other (very drunk) US air force guys, in town for 3 days. Friday was an entertaining night, and one of the Canadian girls was younger and asked if I wanted to hang out with the next night. They were alot of fun, and I was having trouble finding flights to get out of Florence anyhow so I said why not!

Apart from this, my pictures and stories are pretty limited. My Sunday one's will make up for it-- promise!

Weekend 3: (10/11- 10/14)- the Sunset, centro and Siena!

THURSDAY (10/11):

Ooook so Blair arrived Thursday night (10/11) and we got him settled and then went into dinner in centro at a restaurant called Trattoria Da Ginone. It was as awesome as all restaurants here!- we had Herring for an Antipasti, my primo was SENSATIONAL- mushroom fettuccine....mmmm and then the equivalent of a spicy beef stew for secondo. I think that this may be my new favorite pasta dish I've had since being here. I am still amazed at how amazing the house wines are at all these restaurants-- and CHEAP!

After dinner we walked around Florence and got some good night shots (above) and took in the sights. Since it is still 60-65 degrees at nights here we took advantage of the warm weather.

FRIDAY (10/12):
Unfortunately Friday turned out to be one of the busiest work days I have had since being here (Murphy's Law) so most of Friday was spent in the apartment plugging away, but I think the downtime was good for Blair anyhow!

So, where I live in the 'burbs there are huge, gorgeous, spectacular, incredible hills and this is where I have been walking a few times a week (trying to keep at least a little in shape since I have no gym...LOL). It is SO beautiful up there so B and I went for a walk to kill some time before dinner. We walked all the way up to the top where the views are pretty awesome, and as luck would have it the sun was starting to set so those pictures are pretty incredible.
After walking up in the hills we went with Michelle and Simone to Fiesole (another suburb sort of area even further up in the hills- phenomenal). The roads are so narrow on the way up there that Michelle was concerned the car would get stuck-- imagine that-- it was pretty cool!
Anyhow in Fiesole before dinner, there is a look-out point where you can see all of Florence and the sunset. Also pictures from above (with Blair and I in them). So after we went to take pictures from the look-out point we had dinner at great pizzeria in San Domenico (actually the same one I ate at my very first night in Florence!). Blair has Pizza Bianco w/ Spinach (basically pizza with white sauce rather than marinara, Simo and I had prosciutto and funghi (mushrooms) and Michelle got her regular....looks like a cheese pizza with lettuce....and even the second time around I still cant remember what it was really called or what was really on it...LOL.

After this is was home for the night....after all, I had bought 5 bottles of wine at the grocery store the day before which were just waiting to be hit...LOL.

SATURDAY (10/13):
Saturday we intended to get up early to go somewhere and explore however Blair played my typical role and ignored the alarm so we didn't actually roll out of bed until 11am--LOL. Anyhow our timing was good after that, and we went DT to catch a bus to Siena (about 1.5 hours outside Florence, obviously another Tuscan city). We walked into the bus station at 12:06 and caught the 12:10pm to Siena-- woo hoo!

Siena was ABSOLUTELY gorgeous. It is an old Medieval City, with an abundance of gothic, and truly spectacular architecture. I thought their Duomo (Cathedral) was even more spectacular then the one in Florence personally....the picture of me looking awe-struck above is when we just got to the Duomo and I am looking up!...LOL

In the middle of Siena there is a piazza called the Piazza del Campo (aka the town square, Freddy girls-- think a huge, more open version of Queen Square) and this is where the Palio (violent, crazy, etc) horse race happens. The history and preparation for this festival and event is extremely lengthy and impressive, all of which I won't go into now b/c you can read about it for yourself but I will explain some of it!

The morning before the race each horse is led into the contrada church to be blessed- IN THE CHURCH! After this the horses are led back to the piazza, which holds almost 50,000 people (and was quite something to imagine after seeing it!!) and all spectators erupt. The history of the race is quite fascinating, and still to this day many of the old customs stand- with jockeys making secret deals to crush their patrons’ enemies!! The best part, apart from all the crazy sabotage attempts and what-not, the first horse to cross the finish line, with or without jockey, is the winner!! After seeing the piazza is quite insane to imagine horses running around this uneven, cobblestone piazza (though i am sure it is altered)- I would have a heart attack! Anyway that is that!

We actually ate in one of the piazza-side cafe's and had awesome (surprise. surprise!) food. Blair had salmon and shrimp pizza, I had seafood linguine (linguine allo scoglio) and we had a full bottle of chianti (incredible Italian red wine)- that cost $5!!...LOL. I included a picture of B's pizza above. After lunch we did more of the tourist thing and snapped more pics (all of which can be seen on FB: http://unb.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2036316&l=81aab&id=121403429
Then it was back on the bus to Florence. The bus we took there was called a Firenze (Florence) Rapide bus, and on the way back we got on Firenze Dirette (Direct)-- although this one was anything but direct...LOL. First we got on just before it was leaving and ended up standing....I cant say I was excited to stand for almost 2 hours on this bus but whatever- its Italy! It ended up being kind of neat though. We ended up stopping in a ton of little towns on the way back to Florence and saw alot of cool little places (and we did end up getting a seat :)
Back in Florence we went and saw the Duomo (I feel like that is a rite-of-passage to being in Florence) and walked around a little, including stops for $8 hot waffles covered in Nuchella (sp?) (imagine, hazelnut flavoured chocolate spread, for those who aren't familiar!!) & gelato, but for some reason the city was riddled with tourists and we didn't stick around long. Blair flew out at 8-9 the next morning which meant a 7am departure time from the apartment so we needed to get him packed and ready for the road! AMAZINGLY the cab we called for 7am, actually arrived right at 7am!-- god love Italy!!..LOL
**For more Palio (Siena horse race) info go to http://www.premier.net/~Italy/palio.htm this is the best, most descriptive site explaining it all and the history (if you a nerd like me and interested in this stuff..lol)

Miss you guys more than you know!

Week 3: (10/8- 10/11)

I'm baaack! Week 3 was BUSY here...well in terms of work anyhow!

It has stayed very, very nice here with temperatures well into the 20's during the day. I won't complain ONE BIT about t-shirts in October!! In light of this Michelle and I have been walking alot in the morning, we went to a new Medici Villa last week...this one was a little more flat to easier to roll little Nicholas around in without making him go off-roading...LOL. That is what all pictures above are of-- the citrus tree's are so cool!

Again these are the old villas (aka summer homes) built in the 13th- 14th century (these two anyway) for the powerful Medeci family. They are built high up in hills (now suburban Florence) overlooking much of the city....although back then there would have been little out here but trees and have taken hours to get to by horseback....so neat to think about!

Blair flew into town on Thursday night and was here until this morning (much shorter than we expected...but we had a great trip, traveled to Siena and ate some GREAT food! Details and pics on the rest of the weekend to follow :)

MISS YOU GUYS!

Weekend 2: (10/5- 10/7) eating, Venice, etc!

Ok, so after a long delay I am back and better than ever!- and I have a new plan. I am thinking that rather than trying to keep this up during the week when a) I am slammed with work and b) I don't have much going on I am going to make one post on Thursday that covers the whole week (unless there's something great of course!!) and then on Sunday's update my weekend post since there should be LOTS to say about the weekends. Sound good?

So Friday night was pretty quiet I went to Centro for dinner again-- as always food was amazing. It amazing how the "house wines" here are more incredible than any wine you can buy at home...LOL. I took some pictures of the restaurant-- it is so cute! Everytime I am in there I think that I wish I could show you guys and since it was quiet later on Friday night I had a photo opt!

Soooo Saturday morning got off to an early start. My train left at 8:30am so I was out of here about 7:30am-- and we know how much I loooooove mornings...LOL. I made it to the train station (S. Maria Novella) in centro fairly quickly since there wasn't much traffic at that time of morning. I had gone DT on Friday to buy my train tickets so I already had those and was ready to roll. The train arrived a little late and I think half the train station was going to Venice so it was a mad rush but all went smoothly. I didnt however figure out the "assigned seating" until much after the fact but it all worked out. I made it to the right "cabin" but wrong seat #.....LOL...although it was good I ended up sitting with a couple from T.O! (Canada). They were very nice, we chatted the whole train ride and no one ever showed up to take my seat so it worked out..LOL. Now I know!

Sooo Amy (FW partner) called me when I was on the train to say that the boat they had planned to take into Venice to meet my actually on ran during "peak" seasons so it was no longer in operation and that she would be a little late. Despite our late departure we got into Venice (Venezia) right on time. I found my out of the train station easily (S. Lucia) and out into the madness. And madness it was. Everyone said that Venice was more touristy than Florence and boy did that seem to be the case this weekend--WOW.

When I first arrived (about 11:30am) it was over-cast and pretty gray (boo!) but not raining. I wandered around to kill some time when I arrived as I called Amy and she let me know that she and John were about 20 mins away. I found us a restaurant to eat at and then hung out on the train station steps and people watched! And were there EVER alot of people to watch!!!!!

When my travel companions arrived we ate at a place called Ristorante da Nuovo and sat outside on the little patio that ran along the Canal. I had lasagne (yes again!) and a bellini (mmmmm!), Amy had tortellini in a cream sauce and I can not for the life of me remember what John got....LOL. Anyhow we had just finished eating and were packing up and it started to POUR. I am talking biggest rain drops I have ever seen!! So we hung out under the restaurant awning for a few minutes but it wasn't letting up and I just had a sweater so we decided we had better find me an umbrella. And did I ever find an umbrella.....from this point forward to be known as the beach umbrella/ the tarp....LOL. It was pretty much big enough to cover half the people on my side of the street....hahaha...very funny.

So despite the rain, we figure- a rainy day in Venice beats a sunny one in Chicago so we trudged on to do some exploring. It did start to get windy though and even my beach umbrella wasn't helping so we ducked into an Irish Pub to have a drink until the storm blew over. It was tiny and packed with everyone thinking the same thing as we were so we kind of stood in the middle of things. I convinced Amy into drinking wine with me though she forewarned that this was her emotional drink (LOL!) and off we went. After about 20 mins there was a couple behind us (just 2 people) sitting at a 4 person table to they offered us a seat. Turns out they were American, in town from LA (Burbank I believe) so we sat and chatted with them. Marilyn and Lee. And I can not even express to you how hard Amy and I laughed when we left this bar.

Let me try to explain these two; Lee was a retired Computer Science guy-- invented some variation of CAD we were told, Marilyn was a now-also-retired accountant- and I think she REALLY wanted people to talk to. She was one of those people who repeated the same thing 12 times in a conversation-- for example- she has a daughter who just had a baby...they now have a grand daughter. Yes- her only daughter just had a little girl- their first grand child.....did I mention they have a new grand child? I dont know if it was the Cider-Beer Marilyn was in to or what but this is what I can tell you:

- They have one daughter
- They have a new 9 month old grand child- Mary-Anne (Mary after Marilyn and Anne after the son-in-laws mother)
- Lee and Marilyn have been married 43 years and she has "loved him for every minute of it, she is a lucky, luck woman....he is a good, good man"
- They travel 250 days of the year, and go to Alaska twice a year
- She is unbelievably in appropriate....see next story:

So I get up to go to the bathroom and when I come back Amy is in TEARS....so we both look at each other and start laughing re: our "wine-is-my-emotional drink" convo that preceded this...LOL. On this note we figure it's time to get moving. Come to find out- at some point during our conversation Amy mentioned that her father had passed away and as soon as I was up and to the bathroom Marilyn grabs her by the hand and says "do you miss him, do you miss your father?"....NEVERMIND that this fact came up in passing 20 mins ago...WHO SAYS THAT?! At any rate, it was a laughed-the-rest-of the weekend-about story....I don't know that you can ever grasp the full extent of this odd, odd encounter but I thought I would share just the same...LOL.

ANYHOW-- so things clear up for a bit and we see some more of Venice, namely the Jewish Ghetto (the area where the word/ term Ghetto actually originated). The pictures from Sat are dull and dreary and gray so I have kept those ones off the postings ;) It's getting really cold by this point so we decide to head back to Lido (Venice Beach) to the hotel, etc so we can just have dinner there. That turned into a 2 hour commute....no joke. We had to take a water bus out into the Canal and across to Lido...then get on a bus in Lido that drove to another ferry (that the bus drove on) then we had to walk to the hotel...PHEW! So by this time we are thoroughly cold and starving...LOL. We ate at a place called Ristorante di Toro back in Lido (and about 4 blocks from the hotel). I had linguini in a white wine sauce with clams and mussles and we have Cabernet--- UNREAL wine! It was going down a little too smoothly for Amy and I ;)

.....hard to believe that I am still only on Saturday....I will be back with more tonight!

for pictures (for those of you who are anxious!)- they are all posted on:

OK SO TO FINISH VENICE OFF AND CATCH UP!!!!!!!!!
Sunday was actually my solo-touring day b/c Amy & John (FW Partner & her husband) had to fly home so I was very happy it was sunny and gorgeous!
I arrived in Venice about 10am (from Lido) and just started wandering. My first mission was to find a Murano glass shop that had been closed on Saturday b/c there was a necklace in the window I needed!..LOL. We had searched most other jewelry shops we passed on Saturday and none where quite like this one! By some stroke of luck I found it and bought it within the first 20 mins in the city and then I was on the move...

Armed with a map of Venezia, which just let me tell you does VERY LITTLE good in a city of water canals, for someone who follows direction rather than street signs..LOL. Truthfully the majority of my wandering in Venice was completely aimless (and lost even!) half the time, weaving my way in and out of tiny allies. I did manage to find all of the hot spots I wanted to hit by sticking with the MASSES of tourists stumbling through the streets.
One of the prettiest sights (picture with me actually in it above!) was the arching bridge over the Grand Canal in an area called Rialto. The bridge is called Ponte Rialto (similar to the Ponte Vecchio in Florence) and you can see straigh down the canal. This area is VERY touristy lined with street vendors, water-side restaurants and an abundance of gondola's (and drivers) ready and waiting for the next romantic commute down the canale. Though they were beautiful, and for sure romantic for an independent traveller 35-50 euros for a short boat ride is just not on the top of the list ;)

The Ducal Palace in Piazza San Marco (added above) was on the most beautiful things I saw in Venice. The Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s Palace, was the seat of the government of Venice for centuries. As well as being the home of the Doge (the elected ruler of Venice) it was the venue for its law courts, its civil administration and bureaucracy and — until its relocation across the Bridge of Sighs — the city jail. The architecture and detailing on this building, and the bell tower situated directly across from it is unbelievable.
After the Palazzo and walking along the Canal in Piazza S. Marco I visited another famous monument called Campo (church) S. Zaccaria and since I was there on a Sunday there was actually a service taking place- unreal. You were not allowed pictures inside, but it was unlike anything I have ever seen. I did include the GORGEOUS pictures from the outside on FB (links above).
After hours of walking around Venice, I decided to jump on one of the water buses and head back around the train station to eat. I figured it was easier to be somewhere close to the train at that point. As I was searching for gelato, for some reason, it occured to me that I should triple check my train time. At this point it was 2pm and I was thinking my train back to Florence left at 4:30pm. LUCKILY, I checked-- b/c my train time was actually 2:38pm-- wow! Anyhow it worked out, I ate beside the station and made the train home. The train was un-eventful, it was another Eurostar train so very nice and cooooomfy, and only took about 2.5 hours. I got back into Florence about 5pm- lot's of time to get settled and unwind :)
THAT DOES IT FOR VENICE !

Day 7 & 8- The sites, the food!

Ok, apologies for the delay-- but here it is!

The last couple of days have BEAUTIFUL here (think 85 degrees) it's fantastic! Since the weather has been so beautiful Michelle and I have tried to get out walking around as much possible around here.
On Tuesday morning we visited one the local Medici Villas. In case you are out of the loop on say.....Renaissance Era power's in Italy here's the run down: The Medici family was a crazy powerful Florentine family in the 13 century, up until about the 17th. They were very, very wealthy and therefore controlled much of Florence- producing popes, and other major rulers; including French and English royalty in the later years! They essentially led the birth of the Italian Renaissance and are very much a household name here.

One of their main legacies and the key to, certainly, a significant portion of the riches and power they possessed was the Medici Bank which was one of the most prosperous in Europe-- and even royalty would come to them for money! [And Stace this is for you] this family actually made a huge contribution to the accounting profession as a whole by developing the improvement of the general ledger system-- the Double-Entry Bookkeeping Sys - I am pretty sure that's what it's called!! Anyhow so this was first used by accountants in Florence...cool huh??)

ANYHOW-- soooo they were very rich, very powerful, blah, blah and had these Villas (or summer homes) over much of Florence and into the outskirts (i.e. in the suburbs by me too!). All of the houses are stunningly beautiful and extravagantly decorated. This one was not open for tours inside on Tuesday but we were able to walk around the outside-- and will go back to do the inside soon!. Soooo these pictures are all from that tour!
Apart from that I have spent the last two days REALLY busy with work...but have had some phenomenal seafood and pasta. And last night I ate at an Osteria out here and had lasagna with ricotta & mozarella (that was pretty much liquid!) chesse (pretty much the GREATEST thing I have ever, ever tasted) and a lamb dish with mushrooms and cranberries....OMIGOD. New best meal in Florence!!
This weekend I head to Venice to meet up with one of the Fieldwork partners (Amy) and her husband so we are going to do some exploring and "get into some real Italian trouble" as Amy would say! ;) I leave Saturday morning and then come back late Sunday night so I will have the weekend to explore...woo hoo!
Miss you guys!!!
